"refuge" - 8/14/14

you say you're known
for being mysterious and cryptic
but so far your honesty's only been inciting
me to poetry

no one writes letters
anymore but your words seared glass
laser-sharp compliments shattering
my lack of expectation

wondering if perhaps this repartee should cease
I've imagined nothing more, nonetheless
than walking into your place of work defenseless
beneath this trench coat of bons mots

I don't even have a trench coat
but as we know I've imagination to spare
it's unfair this connection's off-limits and compassion
was out of season

the day we were introduced
if only to be written off as friendly
when somehow, in your eyes I see
(and I've only seen them once)
